Application of Monte Carlo Algorithms to Cardiac Imaging Reconstruction

Monte Carlo algorithms have a growing impact on nuclear medicine reconstruction processes. One of the main limitations myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is effective mitigation scattering component, which particularly challenging in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). In SPECT, no timing information can be retrieved to locate primary source photons. methods allow an event-by-event simulation kinematics, incorporated into model system response. This approach was adopted late Nineties by several authors, and recently took advantage increased computational power made available high-performance CPUs GPUs. These recent developments enable fast image with improved quality, compared deterministic approaches. Deterministic approaches are based energy-windowing detector response, cumulative estimate subtraction component. this paper, we review strategies correct effect SPECT focus developments, nowadays threedimensional cardiac images few seconds.
